The Peregrine Centre offers small research grants for projects focused on rural mental health practice in NSW. Here is a summary of one of the projects we have supported as part of our Small Grants scheme.

Project Team: Dr Alison K. Beck, Mr Martin Clements, Ms Chloe Haynes, Dr Rebecca Gray, A/Prof Briony Larance, Dr Katinka Van De Ven, Dr Isabella Ingram, Ms Elle Coleman, Prof Peter J. Kelly

Researchers from the University of Wollongong conducted a study to better understand how SMART Recovery groups support men living in rural and remote areas, where access to mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) services is often limited.

The project explored participants’ experiences, wellbeing outcomes, and help‑seeking behaviours to see how SMART Recovery groups function as a support pathway. Using qualitative interviews and longitudinal surveys over six months, the evaluation examined engagement, group dynamics, and changes in mental health and substance use.

Early findings suggest that SMART Recovery provides an accessible and empowering support option, with men reporting improved self‑awareness, greater wellbeing, stronger interpersonal skills, and value in setting their own goals. For some individuals with limited access to formal treatment, these groups represented a primary or sole source of ongoing support.
